Speech therapy can also improve the control and coordination of vocalization. Sometimes too, vocal fold surgery is considered to reposition the vocal cords.

Who Else is Affected by Spasmodic Dysphonia?

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) affects between 30,000 and 50,000 people in North America. However, this condition is more common in women than in men. Middle age, anywhere in the ages of 30 to 50, it usually commences presenting. The onset age was between 13 and 71 years (average of 45 years) in 168 patients in a study.

How RFK Jr.’s Condition Differs from Other Voice Disorders

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) differs from other voice conditions such as vocal cord nodules, polyps, or paralysis. SD is classified as a neurological disorder, believed to result from a central nervous system issue, possibly involving the basal ganglia of the brain.

In contrast, vocal cord nodules and polyps are structural abnormalities, while paralysis results from nerve damage that impacts muscle function. SD arises from improper nerve connections, whereas other disorders may result from vocal misuse or physical alterations to the vocal cords.

Before his diagnosis, RFK Jr. was a highly sought-after public speaker, able to address large audiences without the need for amplification.
