The source of the issue? A set of photos Modi shared on X sharing his gorgeous beach vacation during his time in Lakshadweep an archipelago unspoiled and located in the southwest of India’s coast.
Modi’s goal was to bring attention to the potential of Lakshadweep’s tourism industry that is not being explored in travel, the tweet caused an outrage from Maldivian officials. They saw it as an attempt to ward off visitors from visiting this area. Maldives as a destination for tourism that is famous for its clear, crystal-clear waters and luxury resorts.
The Maldivian response was swift and sharp. Many officials posted on social media to denigrate Modi using insults that ranged between “clown” as well as “puppet to Israel.” These derogatory comments sparked anger in Indian public figures and citizens who swiftly demanded the boycott of Maldivian tourism.
