After Madeleine went missing, Sterns was arrested for unrelated crimes, making the investigation into her disappearance more difficult.
Stephan Sterns is facing serious accusations of sexually abusing Madeline Soto over several years.
Evidence, including explicit photos and videos from August 2022, shows he abused Madeline starting at 11 years old.

For some reason, she appeared to be annoyed, but there was something off: investigators accused her of crying fake tears.
They interrogated her over relationship with Sterns and whether she was aware of the abuse that Sterns had subjected his wife to.
The case progressed to another level that had Sterns arrested for Madeline’s murder and child sexual abuse material was found in his phone.
The media release from the Orange County Medical Examiner regarding the cause of Madeline Soto’s death came out after she was found dead on March 1, 2024, reading that she choked to death.
This type of injury was confirmed by the examination; one could note that the state of the body pointed to the fact that the lady had been dead for about three days.
It was very important in investigation because it supported the theory about her death and the identification of Stephan Sterns, the last man she met.
Stephan Sterns is now, for the loss of 13-year-old Madeline Soto, facing 60 charges of disappearance.
He is charged with 8 / major offenses, one of which is Sexual Battery on a Child Under 12 for which, on conviction, means losing the right to live as a free man.
Sterns is also accused of 5 counts related to child between 12 years and 18 years, 7 counts of sexual assault and 40 counts related to possession of child sexual abuse material.
Information found on his phone including obscene images and videos resulted in his arrest early in February 2024.
